    We are excited to be hosting our very first Dragon Boat Race event this year! We have partnered with New Wave Events, who are experts in the Dragon Boating world; they will be assisting with race coordination and making the day one to remember.

    Where: Wokingham Waterside Centre, Thames Valley Business Park, Reading, Berkshire, RG6 1PQ

    Who: Crews of 11 participants (over the age of 16)

    We are asking that each participant pays a registration fee of £25 and that your team makes a pledge to raise a minimum of £1,100 (£100 per crew member).  The crew registration fee and competition of your crew sign up form can be made using the Get Tickets button below, the crew registration fee will need to be paid at group cost. Once we have received your crew sign up form, a member of the charity will be in contact with your Crew Welcome Pack. 

    As this is a fun race day, we will be holding an awards ceremony at the end of the day where you and your crew have the chance in winning one of our six awards. To make things a little more interesting, we would like to encourage all crews to pick a theme and compete in fancy dress. Our awards will be given out to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Fastest Crew, The Best Dressed Crew, The Best Fundraising Crew and The Overall winning Crew of South-Central Ambulance Charities Dragon Boat Race 2023.

    Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition which has become the United Kingdom’s fastest growing water sport activity in recent years. New Wave Events are a specialist Dragon Boat event management company, who will be bringing their brilliant team of experts and water first aiders, so everyone will be in great hands! With their help, we have the opportunity to offer up to 36 crew spaces on the day, with crews made up of 11. In this exciting, fun and highly competitive challenge, your crew of 11 will take part in at least three races on dragon-decorated canoes all whilst being cheered on by family and friends on the shore.

    Step 1: Recruit your crew! Gather friends, family and colleagues to make a crew of 11, remember anyone over the age of 16 can enter the race and all crew members need to ensure that they are fit and healthy.

    Step 2: Decide on your crews’ theme! We would like to encourage all crews to compete in fancy dress; throughout race day you and your crew have the chance to win one of our many awards, one going to the best dressed team. This is your chance to get wild and creative, but please make sure that your fancy dress outfit is safe and complies with New Wave’s outfit rules (the rules can be found under ‘what should I wear’ in the participant information pack or FAQ)!

    Step 3: Once you have rallied all 11 members of your crew and decided your theme, the next thing to do is complete your crew sign up by clicking the Get Tickets button below. The button will take you to a separate page where your crew manger will need to enter their details plus a little bit about your crew and pay your team registration fee. *THIS STEP MUST BE COMPLETED TO SECURE YOUR CREW PLACE, IF WE HAVE NOT HAD CONFIRMATION OF YOUR COMPLETE CREW SIGN UP AND RECEIVED YOUR CREW REGISTARTION, YOU AND YOUR CREW COULD MISS OUT ON RACE DAY!*

    Step 4: When we receive a notification of your crew sign up, we will be in contact to provide you with your welcome pack! In your welcome pack there will be three separate forms, one of which we will need returned to us asap to ensure your team can compete on race day, or two if you have any under 18’s in your team.  The other form will need to be completed and brought with you on race day, failure to bring this form will result in your crew being dismissed. We will also include an invoice for your teams registration fee.

    How old do I have to be to enter the race?

    The minimum age for competitors is 16 years, and everyone under 18 years must fill in and return the supplied parental consent form. Any youth teams (16 & 17-year old’s) must always have at least one responsible adult with the team.

    Do I need any Dragon Boating experience?

    Previous experience of Dragon Boat Racing is not necessary to enter a crew, but all crew members MUST BE WATER CONFIDENT WHILST WEARING A BUOYANCY AID IN COLD WATER.

    What should I wear?

    We recommend that all competitors wear shorts, T-shirt and trainers whilst competing. Most importantly, make sure you have some sensible footwear, absolutely no flip flops allowed. You are also advised not to wear jeans as they become heavy when wet. We also suggest that everyone brings a towel and change of clothes, as competitors can expect to get damp from the splashes made by fellow paddlers during racing. We would like to encourage teams to wear fancy dress on the day as there will be an award to be won for the best dressed team.

    What do I/my team need to do in preparation for this event?

    Decide a team name and team theme, set up your team Just Giving fundraising page and start fundraising towards your £1,100 team target.

    What does my registration fee cover?

    Your registration fee covers you and your teams entry to the race, hire of dragon boat, safety vests, rowing oars, drum and drumsticks and a complimentary drink.

    I cannot make the event anymore, is my team place transferable?

    Whilst we can’t refund participant registration fees, you are welcome to arrange the transfer of place between you and the new participant. If there are any participant changes within teams please email the changes to cerys.aston@sca-charity.org.uk.

    A team member has dropped out last minute and we cannot find another team member to take their place, can we still race on the day?

    Crews may race with less than 11 but the number in the boat must be the same at the finish of the race as at the start. You can reduce the number of paddlers to a minimum of 8 but you must always have a drummer.

    Will there be changing and toilet facilities?

    Wokingham Waterside Centre will be open for all participants to use the shower and changing facilities. Toilet facilities will be provided outside in the car park of the centre.

    Are we allowed to bring alcohol to the event?

    We would ask all teams to refrain from bringing lots of alcohol onsite and ask that any drinks you bring are consumed after the racing. However, please note, anyone who is intoxicated will be asked to leave and not be allowed on the boats. 

    Not got a full crew but would still like to enter?

    Don’t worry! We understand that it may be difficult to recruit a full crew of 11 participants, so that’s why we have decided to offer you the chance to sign up as an individual or as small group. Once we have 11 individuals or a group of smaller crews signed up, we can pair you together to make a crew of 11. So register your interest using the link below, to be added to our list. Payment of registration fees are not required until you have been successfully paired into your crew of 11.

    About volunteering opportunities

    The ambulance service strives to get to patients as quickly as possible. Community First Responders (CFRs) are volunteers that are trained and despatched by UK ambulance services.

    South Central Ambulance Charity supports over 1,200 Community First Responders, medical students, military, police and fire Co-Responders. These Community First Responders and Co-Responders are trained to respond to life-threatening emergencies. They are deployed by South Central Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust’s Emergency Operations Centre and form an integral part of the ambulance service’s emergency patient response.

    Volunteer responders provide essential life-saving treatment and support in those crucial minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. This includes responding to patients of all ages suffering a life threatening emergency such as cardiac arrest, heart attack, breathing difficulties or a stroke. Our volunteers are trained by South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).

    These volunteers come from every walk of like. What they have in common is their desire to make a difference by volunteering to support patient care in emergency situations. Each year they attend over 30,000 incidents across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire. CFRs and Co-Responders give up their time to help save lives in their community.

    SCAS Charity funds the uniform, equipment and training for our volunteer responders. They are trained and managed by SCAS’s Community Engagement and Training Team.

    South Central Ambulance Service has a committed team of over 1200 volunteers working across our service.  Volunteering is currently focused on operational delivery, providing clinical excellence and patient experience through the Community First Responder and Co-Responder programmes.  For our Volunteer Car Drivers working within our Patient Transport Service the focus is on ensuring patients in the community are able to access hospital services and attend medical appointments providing a friendly, safe and reliable service.  The SCAS Board recently agreed a new five year volunteering strategy which will seek to introduce a number of new roles both clinical and non-clinical, to support our services.  We have recently agreed a new volunteer strategy that will see the number and variety of volunteer roles increase across SCAS.     The Patient Panel has been designed to increase the involvement of patients, as well as their families and carers, in improving and shaping the future of our services. 

    The panel is made up of patients, family members or carers of patients who have used SCAS services, as well as representatives from voluntary groups and partner organisations.

    The Patient Panel Volunteers will have an opportunity to gain insight and have a say on service developments and improvements across 999 emergency services, Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) and NHS 111.

    This volunteering opportunity is flexible meaning you can get involved in a way that suits you. 

    You will be asked to attend  meetings, either in person or online, to discuss issues, as well as share views on specific areas of interest, including the design, development and delivery of Trust services through focus groups or via surveys and other online feedback

    To join us as a Patient Panel Volunteer you need to be over the age of 16 years old (for some roles their is a minimum age of 18 years), live in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and able to listen and discuss different perspectives with others in a constructive way. 

    The Patient Panel will have a dedicated Patient Voice Panel Lead to provide ongoing support to the panel and its members. You will receive an appropriate level of support, training and education so you are able to effectively contribute towards Trust projects and workstreams.

    South Central Ambulance Charity is an NHS Charity. 

    BASICS – Enhanced Care Volunteers

    South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) have a newly formed volunteer scheme, comprising of experienced Paramedics and Nurses who are employees of SCAS, but choose to volunteer their time outside of their normal role and working day, in order to provide enhanced patient care, which includes advanced pain relief, monitoring and other advanced interventions.

    The SCAS Charity are pleased to support this group of staff, which will grow in time, by providing assistance with funding for certain pieces of equipment – which is within our objective, as this life-saving service is entirely over and above that provided by the NHS and statutory funding.

    Some of the ways in which the charity support the scheme include provision or part provision of funds for items such as:

    • LUCAS Chest Compression devices – for use in cardiac arrests
    • Advanced patient monitoring equipment
    • Advanced airway equipment
    • Some items of uniform / personal protective equipment

    This team relies heavily on charitable donations to enable them respond to some of the most critically ill and injured patients we see. We have recently been lucky enough to have a fully liveried response vehicle donated to the SCAS charity by Smarter Metering Services to enable this team to respond quickly, with all the equipment they need.

    The team are still growing and the demand for their expertise and assistance is growing too. We are looking to continue to raise funds over the coming months to ensure they are even better equipped to help save lives and will be looking to support them in purchasing the following items:

    • Equipment bags – £300
    • Ultrasound equipment – £3500
    • Ventilators – £3600
    • Personal protective equipment – £950

    The scheme works with the British Association for Immediate Care Schemes (BASICS) who assist with the organisation of such volunteers schemes across the UK.

    Volunteers may be used in a variety of ways in SCAS, but the following are the most frequent volunteering opportunities available.  

    • Community First Responders (CFRs) – individuals who volunteer to provide a limited emergency response in their communities helping us to respond to patients more quickly than we may be able to otherwise. 
    • Volunteer Car Drivers (VCDs) – supporting the transport of mobile patients to and from hospital appointments. 
    • SCAS Charity Volunteers – individuals who volunteer to help with any aspect of the Charity’s activity.
    • Patient Panel – South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is establishing a new Patient Panel designed to increase the involvements of patients, as well as their families and carers, in improving and shaping the future of our services.
