    South Central Ambulance Charity is an NHS Charity. 

    BASICS – Enhanced Care Volunteers

    South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) have a newly formed volunteer scheme, comprising of experienced Paramedics and Nurses who are employees of SCAS, but choose to volunteer their time outside of their normal role and working day, in order to provide enhanced patient care, which includes advanced pain relief, monitoring and other advanced interventions.

    The SCAS Charity are pleased to support this group of staff, which will grow in time, by providing assistance with funding for certain pieces of equipment – which is within our objective, as this life-saving service is entirely over and above that provided by the NHS and statutory funding.

    Some of the ways in which the charity support the scheme include provision or part provision of funds for items such as:

    • LUCAS Chest Compression devices – for use in cardiac arrests
    • Advanced patient monitoring equipment
    • Advanced airway equipment
    • Some items of uniform / personal protective equipment

    This team relies heavily on charitable donations to enable them respond to some of the most critically ill and injured patients we see. We have recently been lucky enough to have a fully liveried response vehicle donated to the SCAS charity by Smarter Metering Services to enable this team to respond quickly, with all the equipment they need.

    The team are still growing and the demand for their expertise and assistance is growing too. We are looking to continue to raise funds over the coming months to ensure they are even better equipped to help save lives and will be looking to support them in purchasing the following items:

    • Equipment bags – £300
    • Ultrasound equipment – £3500
    • Ventilators – £3600
    • Personal protective equipment – £950

    The scheme works with the British Association for Immediate Care Schemes (BASICS) who assist with the organisation of such volunteers schemes across the UK.

    Volunteers may be used in a variety of ways in SCAS, but the following are the most frequent volunteering opportunities available.  

    • Community First Responders (CFRs) – individuals who volunteer to provide a limited emergency response in their communities helping us to respond to patients more quickly than we may be able to otherwise. 
    • Volunteer Car Drivers (VCDs) – supporting the transport of mobile patients to and from hospital appointments. 
    • SCAS Charity Volunteers – individuals who volunteer to help with any aspect of the Charity’s activity.
    • Patient Panel – South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is establishing a new Patient Panel designed to increase the involvements of patients, as well as their families and carers, in improving and shaping the future of our services.

    Could you, or someone you know, help us? 

    Do you like driving? Do you like meeting new people? Do you have some time to spare? Are you based in Hampshire?

    If so, have you considered becoming a Patient Transport Volunteer with South Central Ambulance Service 

    Our Patient Transport Service helps hundreds of people access hospital services every day of the year. 

    We are assisted by a dedicated professional band of Patient Transport Volunteers, who provide transport using their own cars, for patients who experience difficulties travelling to their non emergency but essential hospital appointments. 

    Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds but all have a common bond in wanting to give something back to their communities!  No previous experience is required just a friendly caring attitude and some spare time. We offer complete flexibility so you can volunteer as little or as much as you like, whilst fitting in with other commitments. 

    In recognition to your contribution we offer you

    • Mileage Allowance (50p a mile) 
    • Ongoing Support 
    • Uniform and equipment 
    • Volunteer Reward and Recognition

    In order to become a Patient Transport Volunteer we require you to have the following:

    •     Be aged over 18
    •     Have a valid UK driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points 
    •    Have access to a 4 door car
    •    Undertake a Disclosure and Barring ( DBS ) check 
    •    Able to use a mobile phone 


    As part of the Application process you will be invited to attend: 

    •  Occupational health screening 
    •  Basic driver assessment
    •  Volunteer induction, this will give you the opportunity to meet other Volunteers and support staff.

    Corporate volunteering

    Corporate volunteering gives employees a change of scenery from their day-to-day job and the chance to learn something new and enhance their local ambulance service whilst doing so. Other benefits from volunteering include:  

        • A boost in team morale 
        • Increases individual productivity 
        • Supports and delivers CSR objectives
        • Have fun, create memories, and have stories to share from learning 
        • Positively impacts their local ambulance service (which none of us know when we may need it)

    If your business or place of work offers staff volunteering days, we would be delighted to discuss opportunities with you and look to identify an appropriate opportunity.  

    It is important to us that any corporate volunteering activity developed is both meaningful and impactful. Therefore, through conversations together we can tailor a volunteer experience suitable for your colleagues, SCAS NHS Foundation Trust and the charity.  

    Some examples of corporate volunteering activities with us could include:  

        • Refreshing one of our ambulance stations with a bit of painting and decorating to make the environments for our colleagues a little more welcoming.   
        • Giving some of our outside spaces a bit of care so our colleagues can have a bit of tranquillity during their breaks.   
        • Helping at a fundraising event. 
        • Assisting our fundraising team securing items for events using your contacts, this could be achieved in the format of a scavenger hunt.  
        • Skill sharing

    Gift Aid is a scheme that allows us to reclaim tax from HMRC on eligible donations. We receive an extra 25p per £1 you donate.

    Regular Giving

    South Central Ambulance Charity plays a vital role within the communities we serve as we fund our volunteer Community First Responders (CFRs) scheme which costs around £300,000 a year and is supported by over 1,000 volunteer CFRs. The NHS does not fund the ambulance service to provide this. CFRs assist the Ambulance Service by attending emergency calls in the areas where they live or work. As they are local, they can often reach a potentially life-threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew can get to the scene.  

    So as you can imagine regular and sustainable gifts are important to us. Setting up a regular gift is really easy to do via Enthuse or speak to your bank to set up your own standing order using our bank account details.

    1 INTRODUCTION

    South Central Ambulance Charity strives for high standards in everything we do and are committed to respect the view of our beneficiaries, volunteers, donors and other stakeholders.

    This privacy policy sets out how South Central Ambulance Charity aims to ensure any information you have shared with the Charity is protected. It sets out how we collect, store and manages and protects your data. Details the types of data we hold and how we use it and what your rights are.

    As part of our work we process and store personal information relating to our supporters, volunteers and donors and we adhere to the Data Protection Act 1998 and the General Data Protection Regulation (effective from 25 May 2018). We take our responsibilities under these acts seriously and ensure the personal information we obtain is held, used, transferred and processed in accordance with these acts.

    South Central Ambulance Charity is part of South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) who are registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office (Registration Number Z9522464).

    2 WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT AND WHY?

    We will only ever collect the information we need. The personal data we store and process, the majority of which is given to us by you, may include:

    Title, name and gender and previous surname
    Contact details including postal address, email address, phone number and links to social media accounts
    Your occupation and professional activities
    Your recreations and interests
    Family and spouse/partner details
    Records of donations and gift aid status, where applicable (as required by HMRC)
    Records of communications sent to you by South Central Ambulance Charity or received from you
    Information about your wealth and media articles about you
    Information on your engagement with fundraising events, or events and meetings organised by SCAS
    We will not collect all of the above information in all cases. We collect this information in connection with specific activities, such as newsletter requests, event registrations, donations, feedback and other fundraising appeals and activity. The information is either needed to fulfil your request or to enable us to provide you with a more personal service by only sending the information and appeals that may be of interest and relevant to you.

    The Charity may use third party partners to support activities described above notably Just Giving, Run for Charity, Mail Chimp and Unity Lottery. We will only receive your personal data from these third parties if you have given your explicit consent to that third party sharing your information. The receipt of data in this manner is treated no differently to any other held by the Charity and is bound by the terms of this privacy statement.

    You do not have to disclose any of this information, however, if you do choose to withhold information we may not be able to provide you with certain services.

    3 WHAT WILL WE DO WITH THE INFORMATION?

    We will use the information you provide to:

    Fulfil your requests – such as requests for newsletters, participation in events and interest in volunteering
    To process donations, registration fees or other financial transactions
    To provide a more personal service to you by sending newsletters, information, appeals and campaigns that may be of interest to you
    To record any contact we have with you
    As we are a fundraising organisation we may gather information about you from publicly available sources for example Companies House, the electoral register and the media, to help us understand more about you as an individual and your ability to support the Charity. We do not use any third party to carry out wealth screening on our behalf. By doing this we can have more focused conversations and communications with you about fundraising and volunteering.
    If we contact you by email you will have the option to either unsubscribe to this form of communication either by clicking the unsubscribe button or replying to the email using the word unsubscribe in the subject line.

    4 STORING YOUR INFORMATION

    Information is stored by us on computers located in the UK. We may also store information in paper files.

    We place a great deal of importance on the security of all personally identifiable information associated with our supporters, volunteers and donors. We use a third party customer relationship Management (CRM) database called Harlequin Software to manage our database of supporters, donors and volunteers. All access to the database is linked to specific role functions and only authorised users with individual login and password can access this data.

    5 YOUNG PEOPLE UNDER 16

    Young people aged 16 or under who would like to participate in an event, make a donation or get involved with us will need to have their parent/guardian’s permission before giving us your personal information. We will not accept a donation or register you for an event without this permission. When we collection information about a child or young person, we will have clear reasons for doing so and will only do say with the appropriate permission of the adult.

    6 PROTECTING PEOPLE WHO MAY BE VULNERABLE

    We believe that giving to the Charity of your choice should be positive experience whether you are an existing donor or a new supporter. We are committed to fundraising in an honest and responsible way, so we take care to ensure we act appropriately with people who may be vulnerable. We also understand that people in vulnerable circumstances may need further support before making a decision about whether to make a donation. South Central Ambulance Charity recognises that we have an obligation to protect those who may be vulnerable. We are a member of the Institute of Fundraising and the Fundraising Regulator and are committed to following the Fundraising Regulator Code of Practice.

    7 YOUR RIGHTS

    You have the following rights in relation to the data we hold about you:

    The right to know how your data is processed; this is explained to you in this privacy notice
    The right to know what personal information we hold about you; this can be exercised by sending us a subject access request using the contact details below. We will respond within one month
    The right to rectification; when we become aware, we will rectify any inaccuracies in your data
    The right to withdraw consent and no longer hear from us; we will comply with any request to change your preferences or for your consent to be withdrawn within one month
    The right to restrict processing; you can limit the way that we use your data
    South Central Ambulance Charity considers its relationship with donors, supporters and volunteers to be ongoing. Individuals who consent to receiving information from the Charity will have their data retained for an initial four years. After a period of four years we will renew our request for consent to continue contacting you. If consent is not given data will be suppressed on our database. If over the following four years there is no further engagement from you then all personal data will be deleted from our database.

    If you have given a donation to the Charity but no longer give consent for us to contact you then your record will be suppressed and you will not receive any further communications. Your personal information will however be retained and not permanently deleted until after seven years to protect the integrity of our financial donation records.

    If you have completed a gift aid declaration and the Charity has claimed gift aid on your donation from HMRC then your record and all financial information must be kept for six years for HMRC audit purposes.

    8 HOW WE USE COOKIES

    A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

    We use Google Analytics traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about web page traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.

    Overall cookies help us provide you with a better website, by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

    Volunteering for SCAS Charity

    SCAS Charity is currently managed by a small team of SCAS staff who are responsible for all aspects of the Charity.  As a department of SCAS the Charity benefits from wider support from teams such as the SCAS Finance, IT and Comms teams but to a large extent this team manages all of the everyday work of the Charity. 

    This inevitably means that resources are limited and we are always looking for volunteers willing to come and help us in a variety of different ways.  Becoming a Charity volunteer, like other volunteer roles, is a flexible commitment that can work around other activities an individual may have.  Hours can be agreed to suit you and various different roles are on offer. 

     

    Volunteering for SCAS Charity

    Our Charity Ambassadors are a growing team of volunteers who we can call onto support the charity in the community or within our Charity Office based in Thame Oxfordshire.

    Being a Charity Ambassador would primarily involve being available at weekends to attend fetes, fairs and county shows, to chat to the public about our work, help out at engagement events at a local supermarket or take part in a bucket collection at a major event.

    In addition Charity Ambassador’s might be asked to support within the Charity Office to help us prepare for events. 

    We will put out calls for help at various points through the year and volunteers are asked to help where and when they can.

    Do you want to volunteer but don’t feel you can commit to attending events, or need the flexibility that can come with volunteering?

     

    Our lunchtime team volunteers are asked to support us with quick and simple tasks which should take up no more than 1 hour – or your lunch break! 

    Maybe its popping a couple of posters up in your area. It could be sharing some posts on social media. Or even dropping off some new collection tins. Whatever it is the task should be no more than an hour.

    Collecting tins across the SCAS area generate important funds for the Charity. Handing out and collecting tins back in can sometimes be time consuming and we are looking for people who are willing to give a few hours each week to go out in their local community and find places that will be willing to house one of our tins and then manage the relationship going forward. This would involve keeping an up to date spreadsheet of where tins have been placed and when, recording when they are collected back, counting funds and then recording and banking those donations.

    About Volunteer Responders

    Join Us

    The ambulance service strives to get to patients as quickly as possible. Volunteer Responders are  trained and despatched by South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS). 

    South Central Ambulance Charity supports over 900 Volunteer Responders.  These Volunteer Responders  are trained to respond to life-threatening emergencies. They are deployed by South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust’s Emergency Operations Centre and form an integral part of the ambulance service’s emergency patient response.

    Volunteer Responders provide essential life-saving treatment and support in those crucial minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. This includes responding to patients of all ages suffering a life threatening emergency such as cardiac arrest, heart attack, breathing difficulties or a stroke. Our volunteers are trained by South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).

    These volunteers come from every walk of like. What they have in common is their desire to make a difference by volunteering to support patient care in emergency situations. Each year they attend over 30,000 incidents across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire. Volunteer Responders give up their time to help save lives in their community.

    SCAS Charity funds the uniform, equipment and training for our Volunteer Responders. They are trained and managed by SCAS’s Community Engagement and Training Team.

    Have you got what it takes?

    If you are interested in being a Community First Responder you will need to be: 

        • Physically fit and healthy 
        • Able to carry out effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for up to 20 minutes (after training) 
        • Over the age of 18 
        • A car owner with a full UK driving licence 
        • We recommend volunteering for a minimum of 20 hours a month 
        • Prepared to have a disclosure and barring service check (DBS) 
        • Prepared to assist in raising funds to support our Charity 

    In return you can expect:

    • Professional training delivered by clinically qualified staff 
    • Continual professional development 
    • Full support and welfare services

    Fundraising ideas @ home

    During the pandemic a number of us found a new love of quizzes as it was a great way for us to socialise albeit virtually.  

    Whilst ensuring you are still following any government guidelines why not host a quiz, you can include picture quizzes whether it be guess the famous person, or guess how old someone is in the picture. A picture quiz is often very welcome amid a normal quiz.  

    Cake Sale Poster  Everybody loves a Cuppa and a piece of cake, so why not host a tea party or coffee morning? You could also add a “guess the weight of the cake “competition and put one of our collection boxes nearby to boost potential donations.

    Has your hair gone wild during the last 18 months? Are your friends and family nagging you to get a haircut? Why not host your very own live Haircut or Headshave? 

    As New Year, approaches are you thinking of giving up smoking. As you know two packets of cigarettes, a week can cost around £27.20 per week that is £108.80 per month. The yearly cost to keep a Community First Responder (CFR) out in their community is £310. That is less than 3 months’ worth of cigarettes to have someone out in their community saving lives.

    Would you like someone to come into your school and show your children how to save a life, or to talk about the Ambulance Service? In return, could you hold a non-school uniform day, a cake sale, and disco or sports day for us? For more information, please contact us.  Why not use one of our handy templates for your event?     How could your community group or club help us?

    Are you part of a Community Group or Club such as a WI, Freemasons, or Rotary? There are many ways your groups and clubs can support us, such as fundraising events, collecting donations. 

    How could we help you, help us? We can offer talks about our role with in the Ambulance Service and our CFRs along with CPR Training and AED/Defibrillators awareness sessions for a suggested donation of £100. 

    Supporting us and our ambulance colleagues in your community really does mean so much. Without support like yours, we cannot be there for our patients and colleagues when they need us the most.
