South Central Ambulance Service has a committed team of over 1200 volunteers working across our service. Volunteering is currently focused on operational delivery, providing clinical excellence and patient experience through the Community First Responder and Co-Responder programmes. For our Volunteer Car Drivers working within our Patient Transport Service the focus is on ensuring patients in the community are able to access hospital services and attend medical appointments providing a friendly, safe and reliable service. The SCAS Board recently agreed a new five year volunteering strategy which will seek to introduce a number of new roles both clinical and non-clinical, to support our services. We have recently agreed a new volunteer strategy that will see the number and variety of volunteer roles increase across SCAS. You can read our new strategy here Volunteer Strategy 2021-2025.

Have you got what it takes?

If you are interested in being a Community First Responder you will need to be:

- - Physically fit and healthy
  - Able to carry out effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for up to 20 minutes (after training)
  - Over the age of 18
  - A car owner with a full UK driving licence
  - Able to volunteer for 20 hours or more per month
  - Prepared to have a disclosure and barring service check (DBS)
  - Prepared to assist in raising funds to support our Charity

PATIENT PANEL volunteers

The Patient Panel has been designed to increase the involvement of patients, as well as their families and carers, in improving and shaping the future of our services.

The panel is made up of patients, family members or carers of patients who have used SCAS services, as well as representatives from voluntary groups and partner organisations.

The Patient Panel Volunteers will have an opportunity to gain insight and have a say on service developments and improvements across 999 emergency services, Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) and NHS 111.

This volunteering opportunity is flexible meaning you can get involved in a way that suits you.

You will be asked to attend meetings, either in person or online, to discuss issues, as well as share views on specific areas of interest, including the design, development and delivery of Trust services through focus groups or via surveys and other online feedback

To join us as a Patient Panel Volunteer you need to be over the age of 16 years old (for some roles their is a minimum age of 18 years), live in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and able to listen and discuss different perspectives with others in a constructive way.

The Patient Panel will have a dedicated Patient Voice Panel Lead to provide ongoing support to the panel and its members. You will receive an appropriate level of support, training and education so you are able to effectively contribute towards Trust projects and workstreams.

South Central Ambulance Charity raises funds to support South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS). All the monies raised by our Charity are used to fund services, projects and equipment that is not supplied by Government NHS funding. Without the money we raise people in our communities would have to wait longer for help which could affect their recovery.

The Charity works across Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

To provide equipment, uniform and training for our volunteer community first responders

All our Community First Responders and Co-Responders (CFRs) are volunteers, and they come from every walk of life. What they have in common is their desire to make a difference by volunteering in life and death situations. CFRs assist the Ambulance Service by attending emergency calls in the areas where they live or work. As they are local, they can often reach a potentially life-threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew can get to the scene.

To build awareness of lifesaving skills and defibrillators in our communities

A little bit of knowledge goes a long way towards saving a life. We want to deliver:

Defibrillator awareness training in every community
First aid and basic life-saving training in schools and communities
Access to lifesaving skills and information for everyone by making basic training available online

The NHS does not fund the ambulance service to provide this. With your help, we can give local communities the skills they need to help themselves, and each other, in a life-threatening emergency.

To support SCAS staff with new equipment and better working environments

Our ability to provide life-saving care is increasingly dependent on our ability to make sure our staff have access to all the latest technology. The NHS funds SCAS to make sure everyone has the basic tools they need to do their jobs. We also support the mental health and wellbeing of our staff and volunteers by enhancing their working environments. With your help, we could give our staff access to equipment to allow even better care of patients.

We are a small team dedicated to supporting those who choose to donate or fundraise for South Central Ambulance Charity. Without funds raised by people within our communities we would not have a Community First Responder (CFR) programme and South Central Ambulance staff would not be able to benefit from some of the enhancements to their working conditions that the Charity are able to provide.
